If you're ever wandering through San Luis Obispo and your cravings lean toward something bold, flavorful, and comforting, Tonita's Mexican Food is where you’ll want to be. Nestled right at 1024 Nipomo St, this casual gem has been serving up mouthwatering Mexican eats that locals and visitors keep coming back for.

The vibe? Super laid-back, perfect for catching up with friends or grabbing a quick bite with the kids. With outdoor seating available, it’s also an ideal spot to soak up the California sun while enjoying your favorite dishes.

Now, let’s talk food—because that’s what really sets Tonita’s Mexican Food apart. Their Carne Asada Burrito is legendary. Juicy, grilled beef, wrapped with beans, rice, and salsa in a warm tortilla—it's the kind of bite that hits all the right notes. If you're after something with a twist, the California Burrito (yes, with fries inside!) is a fan favorite. The Chili Verde Burrito brings the heat and flavor, packed with tender pork and that signature green sauce. And let’s not overlook their Breakfast Burrito, which might just ruin all other breakfast burritos for you.

For taco lovers, the Carnitas Taco is a must. It's simple, authentic, and absolutely satisfying.

What makes Tonita’s stand out isn’t just the food—it’s the full experience. The moderate noise level keeps the energy up without being overwhelming. It’s the kind of place where everyone feels welcome, from solo diners to big groups.

Whether you're stopping in for a hearty lunch or fueling up after a beach day, Tonita's has you covered with fresh ingredients, fast service, and big flavors that stick with you.

The food was quite delicious, I recommend trying the Chicken burrito, it was quite appetizing, and the size of the burrito was a bit bigger than more ones and that was enough to fill me up to the brim, The service was was good, they treated us very nicely and respectfully. I highly recommend going there

This little restaurant is located adjacent to the creek in San Luis Obispo and was conveniently located near the Thursday Farmer's Market. Counter service is pleasant. Food is delivered quickly. My taco/enchilada was as expected with an ooey, cheesy enchilada and juicy steak taco. My husband loves their pozole, but it's only available on the weekend. He did enjoy the chile verde. The salsa bar is a nice touch. Chips were fresh and hot!

Absolutely blown away by the Pollo Colorado Burrito at Tonita's Mexican Food! It was hands down the most amazing burrito I've ever had. The mole sauce was super mellow and complemented the burrito perfectly. The flavors were rich and authentic, making every bite a delight. The portion size was generous, and the service was top-notch. 12/10 experience. Highly recommend! If you're a fan of Mexican cuisine, Tonita's is a must-visit. The staff is incredibly friendly, and every dish is prepared with love and care, which shows in the taste. I can't wait to come back and try more from their menu. #BestMexicanFood #AmazingBurrito #FoodieFavorites #MoleSauceMagic #12OutOf10 #MustTry #SupportLocalEats #TonitasMexicanFood #FoodLoversParadise #MexicanCuisine #AuthenticFlavors #HiddenGem #GourmetExperience #BurritoBliss #TopNotchService

I want to tell you a story, I understand this is not your typical taco review, but I want you to listen, listen carefully and you might understand a little better about this restaurant, this town, these people, what this all means, how to attain enlightenment, and what it means to be a "Slocal", which is a slur for a person from San Luis Obispo, once thought to be a derogatory term, now embraced, because, why the hell not? Once there was a freshman high school student in his 5th period Spanish class (that's the one after lunch and before you go home), there's an older sophomore, he is thought to be cooler and of sophisticated culinary understanding. He tells the freshman about a restaurant downtown called Tonitas, says it's good, so the young freshman goes there, agrees that it's good, tells his friends family etc about it. Some time later, the freshman, proud to be "in the know" about Tonitas, casually mentions to the older sophomore that he and his buddy went there over the past weekend. "Oh you guys actually went there?" the older sophomore replies, laughing. In a moment of confusion, ignorance, understanding, bliss, the 2 parties realize what has happened: carefully crafted conceit, a sadistic prank, some culinary foolery. The freshman, embarrassed - vows to never be fooled in the realm of local Mexican cuisine again, tries other Mexican restaurants, learns the difference between things like adobada, boracio, carnitas, asada, the importance of well cooked and well seasoned meats, different types of tortillas, to make decisions for himself, to eat spicy salsas, all salsas, with fried chips and glasses of horchata. Throughout - he continues to eat at Tonitas, in an act of stubborn blissful ignorance - but always alone: he skateboards there alone, eats nachos alone, goes home with his half eaten plate of nachos, watches reruns of freaks and geeks, smokes weed, ponders the universe, all by himself. Eventually, the freshman gets some friends, he even goes to college: California Polytechnic University- in a period of reinvention, growth, parties, hackysacking, etc. Often, nights lead to the downtown bar scene, which often leads to late night visits to Tonitas (open nightly until 3am). Tonitas is the scene for much late night drunken debauchery, fights, puking, make-outs, bonding between bros, etc. The freshman (now 30) knows this, yet he knows, we all know, what brought him to Tonitas in the first place. The original sin, the original fool's errand, the twisted advice. He can't forget. 15 years later, a steady career in the architecture industry, gym memberships, relationships, trips to Ibiza. Once fooled, always a fool. It's a few days after Christmas, 2am, after a night of modelos, bar hopping, catching up. He's there with old friends, 4 of them, life has taken them on different paths, yet they're all back here, in this shithole town, with a blessed array of Mexican food. In walks a tattooed man with dreadlocks and a toothy grin, a toothy grin you'd recognize anywhere, from Spanish class, to ramen counters, to local anarchist bicycle rides.
